We are diving into the Book of the Secrets of Enoch—also known as 2 Enoch—a text that takes us beyond the familiar biblical narrative and into a world of cosmic revelation and profound spiritual insight. This ancient work, surviving primarily in Old Slavonic manuscripts, is believed to have been written in the late first century AD, offering a unique glimpse into the apocalyptic visions and wisdom teachings of the patriarch Enoch.

In this discussion, we are exploring how the book's depiction of Enoch's journey through the ten heavens, his face-to-face encounter with the Divine, and the ethical instructions he passed down to his descendants provide a "grounded truth" about a history that many have overlooked. The text reveals Enoch's detailed visitation of multiple dimensions of heaven, where he witnesses the workings of creation, the angelic hierarchies, and the very throne of God. According to the account, Enoch was commanded to record these heavenly secrets in 360 books—a revelation he received directly, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

But what makes this truly fascinating is its connection to the Bible. The Epistle of Jude directly quotes from the earlier Book of Enoch (1 Enoch), implying that the Holy Spirit inspired these prophetic words, even though the book itself was not included in the final biblical canon. This has led to centuries of discussion: Why was a text so influential on early Christian writers and so formative on New Testament doctrines, ultimately not recognized as inspired Scripture?

Today, we are also acknowledging the scholarly history behind this text. The version many are familiar with was translated and edited by R. H. Charles, whose work on the Book of Enoch was published in the early 20th century. While some consider his 1917 translation a foundational piece of scholarship, others note that advances in ancient languages have since provided new insights. Our focus, however, remains on the truth contained within the narrative itself—the history, the knowledge, and the spiritual wisdom Enoch received.

We are separating tradition from truth and examining how this ancient text, though outside the Bible, can illuminate our understanding of the biblical trust we hold today. This is a conversation about discerning what is true, what is useful, and how the Holy Spirit has guided His people through these texts across the ages.
